Why Teach Theatre is our Schools?

Theatre is a SCIENCE.
Theatre is MATHEMETICAL.
Theatre is a FOREIGN LANGUAGE.
Theatre is HISTORY.
Theatre is PHYSICAL EDUCATION.
Theatre is LANGUAGE ARTS.
Theatre is BUSINESS.
Theatre is TECHNOLOGY.
Theatre is ECONOMICS.

Theatre should be taught in schools
Not because you are expected to major in theatre,
Not because you are expected to perform all through life,
Not so you can relax,
Not so you can have fun,
But
So you will recognize BEAUTY,
So you will be SENSITIVE,
So you will be closer to an INFINITE BEYOND THIS WORLD,
So you will have more LOVE,
More COMPASSION,
More GENTLENESS,
More GOOD,
In short,
More LIFE.

Of what value will it be to make a prosperous living
Unless you know how to live?

That is why theatre should be taught in our schools.

If A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words...

I spent last night going through last season's photos of ACT Theatre to select a few photos for some publicity. If a picture is worth a thousand words, we are rich...in words, quality of work and people! I was amazed at the moments captured over the last year, both onstage and off. Trying to select one photo from each show is impossible. Trying to select a grouping of photos that capture the season is impossible. Trying to select photos that showcase eveyone that deserves to be spotlighted is certainly impossible. The choices will be made somehow and I am thankful for the trip through the archives, for once again I got to see the spirit of what makes Artists Collaborative Theatre great!!!

PIKE ARTS COOPERATIVE EXTENSION

The Miracle Worker wrapped up last weekend at Artists Collaborative Theatre (ACT). The cast and crew really took this production to a new level, working tirelessly to deliver an emotional and incredibly heartfelt performance each time. Some audience members were so touched by the performance that they left in tears. A few even stopped to say that they felt this was the best production staged by ACT. We can’t thank you enough for coming out to support the theatre and the arts. We are also so appreciative of your spreading the word. We see new faces in the audience all the time. Thank you!

The next production staged by ACT will be The Foreigner, which begins July 7 and runs through July 31. The Foreigner is ACT’s summer comedy and tells the story of Froggy and Charlie, who arrive as guests at a rural fishing lodge. People at the lodge try to talk to Charlie, but his terrible shyness prevents him from speaking. As his friend, Froggy tries to cover for Charlie by explaining that he can’t talk because he is from an exotic country and doesn’t understand English. Because the people think that Charlie can’t understand them, he soon discovers scandals and secrets amongst the residents of the lodge. Come prepared to laugh and have a great time!

Showtimes will be Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 3 pm. Tickets are $8 each and will be available at the door or by calling (606) 754-4228. For more information, please visit www.act4.org. The theatre is located at 207 N. Patty Loveless Drive, Elkhorn City.

Stone Heritage held their monthly business meeting last week. If you haven’t had a chance to visit Stone Heritage Museum, you’re missing out on the opportunity to see and learn about the rich history of the community of Stone and Pike County. The Pond Creek Mining Company established the community in 1910, but since that time, major players have been involved in the community, from John F. Kennedy’s father to Henry Ford. The museum is open the first Saturday of every month from 10 am to 4 pm. Make plans to visit and come away with a deeper appreciation of our wonderful county. The next regular meeting of Stone Heritage is scheduled for July 21 at 6:30 pm. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. Stone Heritage is located at 1355 Pond Creek Road, Stone.

The Pike County Artisan Center is so close to its grand re-opening! Plans are in the works for workshops, art classes, exhibits, and maybe even a couple of surprises. The Artisan Center is located on Second Street in downtown Pikeville and will be open to the public soon.

Pike Arts is currently designing a brochure for the arts in Pike County. We would like to include all arts activities that are open to the public. The Blank Social Canvas of Rural Arts

In art, as in life, there are many new beginnings; the baby steps of a new county extension program created through a hopeful group of dreamers from the University of Kentucky, College of Fine Arts, College of Agriculture, Pike County District Extension Board, a brother, and a group of local artists,a new script, a new arts exhibit, a new idea on the dry erase board, a new advisory council, a new project that takes wings, a new class of learners, a new teacher, a new black box theatre, a new home for an artisan center, a new grant, a new program assistant, a new volunteer, a new day, a new goal.

I guess this blog is only one more "new" on the path of rural arts development in Pike County, Ky. We are happily launching a new set of Social Media tools to further frame and deliver our quality arts to the world.

As one of the major challenges in Rural Arts Development is getting the message delivered so people have the information needed to change behaviors and adopt habits that include the arts in their day-to-day lives, I believe this is a grand step for Pike County Arts.
